Supplements for Surgery – pre & post surgery

We have been collecting lists of supplements that have been recommended for surgery & compiled them below. Most recommendations state that these supplements may be taken during the period of two (2) weeks before surgery & should be maintained for two (2) weeks after the procedure.

  • Vitamin A – This antioxidant is required for new cell growth & maintenance/repair of epithelial tissue.
    • Dosage Range – 15,000 – 25,000 iu/d (palmitate or carotenoid forms are best) – Limit use to 4 wks
    • Product recommendation – Thorne Research Vitamin A
    • Vitamin C (with flavonoids) – This antioxidant is necessary for tissue growth & repair & in the formation of collagen.
      • Dosage Range – 500 – 750 mg daily in divided doses
      • Product Recommendation – Thorne Vit-C 500 w/ Bioflavonoids or Jarrow Formulas Vit-C 750 w/ Bioflavonoids
      • B Complex – This is a mix of ‘anti-stress’ water soluble vitamins that are necessary for multiple metabolic pathways. The best strength is a B-100, with many of the B-vitamin forms in 100 mg.
        • Dosing Range – Twice a day with meal. Skip pm dose if sleep is disrupted.
        • Product Recommendation – PURE B-Complex+, Douglas Labs Tri-B 100
        • Zinc & Copper - (use a combo formula for simplicity) – These antioxidants aid in forming collagen. Zinc is essential for protein synthesis & copper is required for the formation of hemoglobin, red blood cells & bone
          • Dosage Range – Zinc is 15-21 mg daily & Copper is 1.5-2 mg daily
          • Product Recommendation – Karuna Zinc Picolinate w/Copper or any Zinc / Copper
          • Selenium - (Multi-Vitamin - may be enough) – An antioxidant that inhibits fat oxidation & protects Vit-E.
            • Dosage Range – 150-210 mcg daily
            • Product Recommendation – Life Extension Super Selenium or PURE Selenium
            • Bromelain – This is a proteolytic enzyme that is used to minimize inflammation & soft tissue injury
              • Dosage Range – 1,500 mg/day Take 500 mg 3 x a day with meals only after surgery.
              • Product Recommendation – Jarrow’s Bromelain or Life Extension Bromelain (Special Coated)
              • Proteolytic Enzyme Combinations – These combination formulas are used to minimize inflammation & soft tissue injury. Zywobin Forte is similar to Wobenzym or Intenzyme Forte, which could be substituted.
                • Dosage Range – Take 2-4 tablets 2-4 a day on an empty stomach
                • Product Recommendation – Ecological Formulas Zywobin Forte
                • Flavonoids - (may be combined with Vitamin C) – This is an anti-inflammatory antioxidant that functions with Vitamin C to prevent bruising & support immune function.
                  • Dosing Range – Take 600-1,500 mg/d in divided doses.
                  • Product Recommendation – Priority-One Mega Flavonoid 2000 or Douglas Labs Bioflavonoid Complex
                  • Arnica Montana – This is a homeopathic remedy for bruising & swelling.
                    • Dosing Range – 30x formula or greater taken 3x/d after surgery
                    • Product Recommendation – Boroin Arnica Montana
                    • Topical cream – Apply to bruising as needed / Product Recommendation – Boroin Arnica Montana
                    • Probiotics – These are the good bacteria that could be destroyed by antibiotics
                      • Dosage Range – 25-100 billion cfu’s taken 1-2 x a day away from antibiotics
                      • Product Recommendation – Jarrow’s 50 billion Ultra-Jarrodophilus or Klaire Labs Therbiotic 100 billion powder
                      • Anesthetic (Anesthesia) Detox – This is a homeopathic remedy to assist the body in detoxing anesthesia
                        • Dosage Range – 1st two days post surgery ~ 10 drops under tongue every 2-3 hrs. Ongoing ~ 10 drops 3x a day.
                        • Product Recommendation – PCHF Anesthetic Detox
                        • Pre & Post Milieu – This is a homeopathic remedy taken before & after surgery to speed up the healing process
                          • Dosage Range – 15-30 drops in warm water taken 2-3 x a day
                          • Product Recommendation – Physica Pre & Post Milieu

Additional Recommendations

  • Pre-Dental Visit – This is a homeopathic remedy designed as a drainage & detoxification formula prior to a dental visit or surgery
    • Dosage Range – Start up to a week prior to the visit ~ 1-10 drops under the tongue 3 times a day (no food)
    • Product Recommendation – Desbio Pre-Dental Visit
    • Post-Dental Visit – This is a homeopathic remedy designed for temporary relief of symptoms related to trauma associated with a dental visit of surgery, including inflammation, swelling or pain
      • Dosage Range – Shake Well! After the visit, take 1-10 drops under the tongue 3 times a day 15 min away from food of liquids
      • Product Recommendation – Desbio Pre-Dental Visit

The following supplements are contraindicated for surgery (up to 4 weeks before & 2 weeks after the procedure).

  • Bilberry - Antiplatlet activity & inhibition of clot formation
  • Dong Quai – May potentiate anticoagulant medications
  • Echinacea – Can cause hepatoxicity (especially is used with hepatoxic drugs & steroids)
  • Ephedra – May cause hypertension, tachycardia, cardiomyopathy, dysrhythmia & myocardial infarction
  • Feverfew – May affect clotting components & is contraindicated with Warfarin & other anticoagulants.
  • Fish Oil – EPA & DHA inhibit platelet adhesion & aggregation.   Excessive doses can inhibit wound healing.
  • Garlic – Contraindicated with Warfarin & other anticoagulants, NSAIDs & aspirin.
  • Ginger – Risk of prolonged clotting time & contraindicated with Warfarin & other anticoagulants, NSAIDs & aspirin.
  • Ginkgo – Inhibition of platelet activity factor & contraindicated with Warfarin & other anticoagulants, NSAIDs & aspirin.
  • Ginseng – May interact with cardiac & hypoglycemic agents, contraindicated with Warfarin & other anticoagulants, NSAIDs & aspirin.
  • Goldenseal – May worsen swelling & high blood pressure.
  • Hawthorne – Potentiates the activity of digitalis & other cardiac glycosides.
  • Kava Kava (currently not approved by the FDA) – May potentiate CNS effects of barbiturates, antidepressants, antipsychotics & general anesthesia.
  • Licorace – May cause high blood pressure, hypokalemia & edema.
  • Melatonin - May potentiate CNS effects of barbiturates & general anesthesia.
  • Red Clover – May potentiate existing anticoagulant medications.
  • St John’s Wort – Contraindicated with other MAOIs or SSRIs. Also may cause photo-sensitivity & there are possible multiple drug interactions.
  • Valerian – Contraindicated with sedatives & anxiolytics.
  • Vitamin E – Anticlotting activity may prolong bleeding time
  • Yohimbe – Contraindicated with hypertension & tachycardia. Increases the potency of anesthetic agents.

Overall, unless a specific supplement has been approved for use before &/or after surgery, it would be best to avoid it. Most supplements may be stopped with no weaning off period, but you should always check with your physician before starting or stopping any supplement regimen.
